Bo Holten: First Snow (1996)
Einojuhani Rautavaara: Canticum Mariae virginis (1978)
Jonathan Dove: Three Kings (2000)
Eriks Esenvalds: Stars (2011)
David Lang: The Little Match Girl Passion (2007)
At the invitation of the museum, a performance in the dramatic setting of the Medieval Sculpture Hall in front of the Christmas Tree and 18th-century Neapolitan crèche, The Crossing will begin with several lyric, moving, contemporary motets for the Nativity, followed by David Lang’s Pulitzer-prize winning work The Little Match Girl Passion, a setting of Hans Christian Andersen’s tragic story, designed after Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. The Crossing’s 2009 performance of the work set the ensemble on a new path; we’re thrilled to offer New York audiences both Lang’s extraordinarily affective musical language and the varied styles of composers from Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, and Latvia.
