The Crossing began its musical "journey" to Italy last evening and we could not be more excited about this concert!

Italy holds a special place in many of our singers' hearts after spending numerous summers in Italy singing at the Spoleto Festival. It was then our great fortune to return there in the summer of 2007 with a fledgeling ensemble that had recently made its premiere in Philadelphia - The Crossing!

While the individual pieces are certainly evocative of that ancient and wonderful culture, the programming itself is a small journey in and of itself. The experience begins at night with Bettinelli's O notte and Yannay's brilliant exploration of insomnia and the sounds of bells in an otherwise quiet Italian village, Le Campane di Leopardi. We then introduce Philadelphia to Salvatore Sciarrino and his fervent evening prayer Responsorio della Tenebrae. The magic of Bettinelli's youthful and joyous Madrigali a 5 voce takes us towards dawn with Stephen Paulus' Madrigali de Michelangelo. As dawn breaks with Bettinelli's Sia calma: "sento sul braccio - il soffio carezzevole di maggio - e il tuo tocco lieve" - one feels upon the arm the caressing breath of May, and your light touch...
